South Rim Sunset

October 28th 2005

Grand Canyon National Park, South Rim

There are those moments in time that if you try to capture,

you lose the beauty of the moment. Absorb that instant as it happens

and you will capture the depth of the experience

much greater than any photo or video could grasp.

South Rim Sunset

At that moment of decision

as the sun slung with grace and precision.

The angles exact,  the intensity correct,

I witness a sunset I shall never forget.

With the Majestic dignity

the low golden race cast out

Far from vertical, almost horizontal,

left to right they mount

As I gazed upon the canyon wall

Though miles away they were not small

The low golden rays, peaking below the rim

Created patches of light and shadows so dim.

The ancient layers of time revealed

The colors ranged from sand to dark peel

The jagged cliffs and protruding rocks

absorb the sun in patchy glows

Too Many Colors for an artist to stock

Shadows melt to the floor below

The patchwork Maze of yellow and beige

brick like Reds and orange like glaze

For the part so blessed and kissed by the sun

jump out from the distance so close we were one

And the backdrop was laude like, a lingering haze

That slowly absorbs the light As it fades.

And if you blink for a moment it shift

so subtle the movements you can’t see them drift

After 10 minutes an eternity seemed

the show was over as if it was dreamed

Just a thin slice of life  carved out served up

With the attention of gratitude for a lifetime erupts
